Assignment – Review of the Javitz Facility

On Saturday, September 5, I had the opportunity to attend my first Star Trek convention. Celebrating 50 years of Star Trek! What better way for me to learn about the Star Trek than a Bicentennial celebration. I got to witness and learn how Star Trek has Influenced technology.

Real Life Cloaking Technology

I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t know much of Star Trek. But after attending panel after panel and conversing with fans it started to grow on me. The Smithsonian Channel along with FiOS sent me there to cover #BuildingStarTrek a new Documentary that explains the culture of Star Trek and influences it has made in the past 50 years. Also in the documentary, you can see how the Enterprise was taken apart so that it can be restored and displayed at the national Air and Space Museum in DC. The original set has been showcased at The EMP. But you’ll just have to watch the Documentary and see how it all got developed.

From 3D printers to signed memorabilia, Star Trek 50 had it all! I had a great conversation with a NASA scientist about the upcoming Mars expedition. He estimates within the next 10-15 years we will have Men/Women in Mars. I even asked him I was “Astronaut” material. Unfortunately, he said I wasn’t physically fit enough ha! I could have told you that. But they do have open availabilities for future astronauts every 2 years.

Q (John de Lancie) explaining how he got started with Star Trek

I have to admit that Trekkies are one of the most nicest people you’ll ever meet. They actually took their time to explain more in depth about each movie or tv series I asked, and they didn’t seem to mind.

The biggest highlight of my day was Leonard Nimoy’s tribute.  The tribute organizers had access to his personal photos never before seen by the public. I learned Leonard was an avid photographer and a family man with a heart unlike anyone else’s. I admit at the end of the tribute, I cried like a baby. Seeing how much he struggled as a young actor before Star Trek, to even being a cab driver where John F. Kennedy was one of his fares. Kennedy told Nimoy “Just keep in mind, there’s always room for one more good one!”

I wanted to give a special shoutout to the OM Media Group, The Smithsonian Channel, Verizon FiOS, Kelli Fitzpatrick, and The ladies from Rock Love Jewelry. I had an awesome time now that I became a Trekkie I can’t wait until next years convention. Cosplay for next year?

Don’t forget to watch #BuildingStarTrek on the Smithsonian Channel

Summer #Staycations

For many, staycations are an option. But at times, staycations are a mandatory part of your work life. At first sure it was hard, but if you love or have a passion for something then nothing can stop you!

Working in the Garment District in NYC has its perks depending on what you do. But for myself, I take on two jobs. One, as an assistant/partner to an elite pattern maker and the other working in production (quality check). Don’t get me wrong I love my jobs, but one of the minor setbacks is not having the availability to fly out. On my free time, I love to photograph just about anything the concrete jungle has to offer and convert that to art through my lens.

Verizon helps me with ALL my staycations. Here’s how,
I love to do overnight trips (close to the city limits) if not picnicking in Central Park or Inwood, among my favorite parks to be in. My Samsung Edge 7 along with the mobile hotspot are an amazing collaboration. Service and speed are what I love.

For those overnight trips, my handy backup battery has enough juice for 2 days. Recently I went on an overnight camping trip near Woodstock, NY. I didn’t have to worry about reception. My camping partner and I were both connected some 10 miles away from the nearest town with full reception. Also, the GPS feature became very helpful as we hiked. We streamed music and roasted marshmallows watching the sun hide away in the mountains peak. When I do stay home, I love to stream music and edit my photography through my cloud storage.

Thank you Verizon for always keeping me connected and up to-date!

Hey Everyone!

It’s May and that means Spring is in full effect. Baseball season is a go, and the NBA are in their playoff games! But not everything is a smooth ride. With the devastations of the two earthquakes in April (Japan, Ecuador) Verizon is helping out with offering free calls to landlines only so you can communicate with your loved ones.

Recently I just finished moving at work, from one office to another. I can say it’s been pretty much a headache. But planning ahead before the big move made everything smoother. Moving from Chelsea to the Garment District, the first thing I checked was if I had enough strong and sturdy boxes. Countless rolls of tape, 27-gallon container bins and a few days of planning ease’s the move. Also, having enough manpower for the move. Are you moving on your own or with professionals?  Here’s a link incase you want to read it more in depth.

Last but not least I wanted to say Happy Mother Days to all the mothers out there! Special shout out to the mothers who have to play two roles to their kids.
